You can utilize the mobile hotspot feature on your laptop if you’ve ever needed to share an internet connection that is limited to a single device, such as you could find in a hotel room, or if you wanted to cover up any dead spots in your home’s Wi-Fi network. After the release of Windows 10 Anniversary Edition, this capability has been made available on all laptops that are able to run a supported version of Windows. On your laptop, you have the option of either creating a hotspot on your own computer or connecting to the hotspot of another device. Laptop Hotspot Setup Guide How to Use Hotspot on Laptop

Enabling Mobile Hotspot on Laptop

With the Windows Settings programme, which is incorporated directly into Windows, you are able to simply create and modify a mobile hotspot. This is how you can accomplish that goal:

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Network & internet > Mobile hotspot.
  3. Next to Share my internet connection from, select which internet connection you want to share. (If you aren’t connected to the internet with multiple different connections, this setting will only show one option or be grayed out.)
  4. Next to Share over, select Wi-Fi. (Sharing over Bluetooth will be unnecessarily slow. Select Bluetooth only if you specifically need to do so.)

On Windows 10

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & internet, and select the Mobile hotspot.
  3. Besides the Share, my internet connection from option, select which Internet connection you want to share.
  4. Select Save.
  5. Turn on the Share My Internet connection with other device switches to start your hotspot.

Connecting to a Hotspot of Another Device

If, on the other hand, you wish to use your laptop to connect to the mobile hotspot of a separate device, you will first have to enable the hotspot functionality on those other devices.

Build a Hotspot as the First Step
The following is a guide on how to open a hotspot on your iPhone or Android device:

On Android

Launch the app labeled “Settings” on your device.
Go to the Connection menu, and then select Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. (The name of the options may be slightly different based on the version of Android you’re using and the manufacturer of your smartphone.)

To begin sharing the internet connection on your device, you will need to turn on the Mobile Hotspot first. (With newer versions of Android smartphones, you also have the ability to share an internet connection that is derived from a Wi-Fi connection.)

You can configure your Mobile Hotspot by clicking on the Mobile Hotspot option, and then selecting Configure from the drop-down menu that appears.
