4G to 5G, Apple grows its commanding share of global smartphone revenue

The newest statistics from Counterpoint Research show that revenue from smartphone purchases fell 3% globally over the previous year. Even worse, shipments fell by 12%, but the bigger drop in shipments was mitigated by an increase in the average selling price (ASP) of 10%. 5G phones contributed to the price increase by constituting a record-breaking 46% of shipments during the quarter. And Counterpoint notes that the price of 5G-capable phones is five times more than that of non-5G smartphones.

Apple continued to lead the league tables in terms of revenue during the third quarter of 2022, accounting for 42% of all smartphone sales worldwide from July through September.

4G to 5G, Apple grows its commanding

In the third quarter, Samsung generated 18.3% of all smartphone sales worldwide, a slight decrease from the 18.5% it generated in 2021. Even though sales of its expensive Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip foldable nearly doubled, its average selling price only increased by 2%. In comparison to the third quarter of 2021, Samsung’s revenue for the quarter fell by 4%.

Third-placed Xiaomi contributed 8.3% of the overall income made by the global smartphone market in Q3. Its share increased from 7.8% during the same quarter last year. The company’s global phone sales increased 4% year over year as a result of robust sales in the low-to-mid-range segments.

Oppo, including OnePlus (starting from Q3 2021), accounted for only 6% of global smartphone revenue during the third quarter of 2022, a decline from the 8.1% share of global smartphone revenue it was responsible for during Q3 of 2021. Oppo’s handset revenue declined a sharp 27% from July through September compared with the same three months last year. Its average selling price dropped by 5%. The issue with Oppo was the COVID rebound in China which was where 40% of Oppo’s total phone shipments wound up during the quarter.
Vivo had an even larger decline than Oppo as it accounted for only 5% of global smartphone revenue during Q3 compared with the 8.5% share of revenue it contributed during the same quarter in 2021.
