Xiaomi has officially announced that Surge OS now supports sending and receiving live photos directly within WeChat chat windows—a feature I’ve personally been waiting for. As someone who frequently shares quick, expressive moments with friends, this update feels like a meaningful improvement to everyday communication.

According to Xiaomi’s official Weibo post on December 10th, users need to update Surge OS to the latest version and ensure their WeChat app is on version 8.0.65 or above. Once updated, sending live photos becomes smooth and intuitive, making chats feel more dynamic and interactive.

Xiaomi Surge OS Adds WeChat Live Photo Support

Interestingly, Xiaomi isn’t the first to roll out this enhancement. Just a few days earlier, on December 4th, OPPO’s ColorOS announced similar support, allowing users to send Live Photos by tapping “+” in a WeChat chat, selecting the Live Photo option, and choosing the “Live” box before sending. The animation plays automatically when the recipient opens it—something I tried recently and found surprisingly engaging. On December 5th, vivo’s OriginOS joined in as well, expanding the feature across major Android ecosystems.

The addition of Live Photos to WeChat isn’t entirely new, though. Back in July, WeChat enabled live photo sharing on iOS devices running version 8.0.61 and above, letting users send animated images via the “+ → Photos” option. Recipients could tap the “Live” button in the lower left corner to view the full motion effect. For me, this was the first time I truly appreciated how much emotion a short moving image can convey compared to a still photo.

WeChat has also been gradually expanding support for live photos in Moments. Last September, the feature began rolling out on iOS (version 8.0.51 and above), and by April this year, Android users were finally given the same ability—a change many users, including myself, considered long overdue.

For those who want to try out the latest WeChat features early, you can obtain the newest internal version by replying “WeChat” on the IT Home WeChat account.
