Converting your SIM to 4G or 5G does not change your number. It replaces an old SIM with a newer one that can use faster networks, provided your phone and area support them. This guide explains how to check compatibility and what to do for Jazz, Zong, Telenor and Ufone.
Quick answer
| Operator | Check compatibility in | Where to convert | What to bring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jazz | SIMOSA app | Jazz franchise or service centre | Original CNIC |
| Zong | My Zong App | Zong franchise or service centre | Original CNIC |
| Telenor | My Telenor App | Telenor franchise or service centre | Original CNIC |
| Ufone | UPTCL app | Ufone franchise or service centre | Original CNIC |
In every case, your number stays the same. The new SIM is activated in your name against your CNIC, so do not hand your SIM or CNIC to an unofficial agent or street vendor.
Before you go: check two things first
- Your phone. A 4G SIM will not give you 5G speeds on a phone that only supports 4G, and a 5G SIM needs a 5G-capable handset. Check your phone’s network settings or specifications before converting.
- Your area. 5G coverage is limited to selected cities and sites, while 4G is widely available. Converting to a newer SIM still improves your service on 4G even where 5G has not reached yet — but do not expect 5G speeds outside a 5G coverage area.
If either check fails, a SIM swap alone will not fix slow speeds. See our guides on how to check remaining MBs and balance and current bundles on the packages hub before spending on a new handset.
How conversion works, step by step
- Visit your operator’s franchise or service centre with your original CNIC. The SIM must be registered in your name.
- Ask for a 4G/5G SIM replacement for your existing number. Staff will verify your CNIC and biometric details.
- Your old SIM stops working once the new SIM is activated. Insert the new SIM and restart your phone.
- Wait for the activation SMS, then test mobile data. If data does not work, check that mobile data is switched on and that the correct access point settings are selected — your operator’s helpline can confirm them.
- Re-subscribe to any bundle you need. Check what is active first using the methods in our how to unsubscribe any package guide, so you do not pay for a bundle twice.
There is no single published USSD code that converts every operator’s SIM, so ignore codes shared on social media. The franchise or service-centre route, confirmed by your operator’s helpline, is the reliable one.
Operator by operator
Jazz
Use the SIMOSA app to review your account and active services, then visit a Jazz franchise or service centre with your CNIC for the SIM replacement. If you need help on the way, call the Jazz helpline on 111 from your Jazz number. Current Jazz bundles are listed on the Jazz internet packages page.
Zong
Use the My Zong App to review your account, then visit a Zong franchise or service centre with your CNIC. The Zong helpline is 310 from your Zong number. Current Zong bundles are listed on the Zong internet packages page.
Telenor
Use the My Telenor App to review your account, then visit a Telenor franchise or service centre with your CNIC. The Telenor helpline is 345 from your Telenor number. Current Telenor bundles are listed on the Telenor internet packages page.
Ufone
Use the UPTCL app to review your account, then visit a Ufone franchise or service centre with your CNIC. The Ufone helpline is 333 from your Ufone number. Current Ufone bundles are listed on the Ufone internet packages page.
After the swap: if the new SIM does not work
- Restart the phone after inserting the new SIM.
- Check that mobile data is on and that you are not in flight mode.
- If calls work but data does not, contact your operator’s helpline (Jazz 111, Zong 310, Telenor 345, Ufone 333) and ask them to confirm the data settings for your handset.
- Do not buy a second SIM to “fix” a failed activation — the helpline or franchise can re-check the activation against your CNIC.
Last verified: November 2026. This is general guidance only: conversion charges and availability can vary, so confirm them at the franchise or on your operator’s helpline before you go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I keep my mobile number when I convert my SIM to 4G/5G?
Yes. Conversion replaces the physical SIM, not the number. Your existing number, registered against your CNIC, is moved to the new 4G/5G SIM, and your old SIM stops working once the new one is activated.
Does converting my SIM automatically give me 5G?
No. You also need a 5G-capable phone and 5G coverage in your area. A new SIM on a 4G phone, or in an area without 5G, will still use 4G. Check both before expecting 5G speeds.
What do I need to take to convert my SIM?
Take your original CNIC to your operator’s franchise or service centre. The SIM must be registered in your name, and staff will verify your identity before issuing the replacement SIM.
What should I do if my new SIM does not work after the swap?
Restart your phone, check that mobile data is switched on, and wait for the activation SMS. If it still does not work, call your operator’s helpline — Jazz 111, Zong 310, Telenor 345, Ufone 333 — and ask them to check the activation and data settings.
